23 February 2023
Clean Up Australia Day, Australia’s largest community-based environmental event, is on Sunday 5 March 2023. This fantastic initiative has had an enormous impact over the past 12 months, with nearly 950,000 volunteers spending over 1.8 million hours clearing more than 12,000 sites.
If you’d like to ‘Step Up to Clean Up,’ some of our Wildlife Queensland branches are running clean-up events on 5 March:
- Wildlife Queensland Bayside Branch, 8:00-11:00 am, Sel Outridge Park, Redland Bay. Register here.
- Wildlife Queensland Sunshine Coast & Hinterland Branch, 8:00-10:00 am, Ben Bennett Bushland Park, Caloundra. Register here.
Or register for an event in your local community.
Step up today and beyond
While Clean Up Australia is best known for its clean-up events, did you know it also encourages communities to step up and play their role in Australia’s constant waste challenges?
Our country produces 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year — that’s a lot! Sadly, only 13% of plastic is recovered and 84% is sent to landfill.
Even worse, around 130,000 tonnes of plastic enter our oceans each year. By 2025, it’s predicted that 99% of seabirds worldwide will have ingested plastic.
Time to make a difference!
Simply refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost.
We can all make a positive impact and work towards a circular economy — where everything is a resource, and nothing goes to waste.
Wildlife Queensland and the Boomerang Alliance continue to lobby for a single-use plastic free Queensland and for the expansion of the Containers for Change scheme. Other solutions include Clean Up Australia’s Buy Recycled program and the Australian Government’s Remade in Australia scheme, both promoting products with recycled content made in Australia.
Let’s all ‘Step Up to Clean Up’ together!
