The groundwork has truly begun for Sam and I. Property visits in the West Logan target areas have begun with new property owners onboard with high potential for YBG presence. The next couple of months ahead will mainly consist of letterbox drops to hundreds of new properties in the hope they will contact us and allow access for surveys.

Along with being posties we are conducting day and night surveys on properties already onboard. The difficulty of the project is that the YBG in this region are almost exclusively on private land, with only a few confirmed sightings from some keen eared landholders, along with a couple of barbed wire rescues. Most residents would not have a clue this amazing species is there.

The projects purpose is to locate the gliders and map their travel routes, feeding preferences and den trees. This information currently does not exist for the Logan population. Once enough connecting properties get involved 🤞 we will set up acoustic monitors and cameras along with regular spotlighting/call playback surveys. A massive task ahead, but a very important one if this species is to have a chance of surviving in this particular region.

I am currently in shock. For the last few nights I have been attempting to capture the brilliance of my local fireflies in the rainforest using multiple exposures on the same shot. What I assumed would be a practice roll has instead delivered some of my favourite images I have ever taken on film.

Three words that will make your Thursday... Fluffy Mini Kangaroo! 😍

This is Grumbles the rufous bettong. Bettongs are a type of potoroid and about the size of a full-grown rabbit, measuring just 38 cm from head to tail.

@intrepid_meg, who captured these amazing images and video of Grumbles, describes the rufous bettong as a mini kangaroo, but a bit fluffier and with little t-rex arms. 🦘🦖 😀

Grumbles is part of a larger bettong project at the Hidden Vale Wildlife Centre in south east Queensland.

Ever wondered why owls tilt their heads like this? Or, if you've been lucky enough to see it, why they bob their heads from side-to-side?
Owls have tubular eyes like telescopes, as opposed to round like ours. Whilst their eyesight is phenomenal, this does mean they can't rotate them in their sockets. By bobbing their heads around like this they can compensate for that and roughly triangulate the distance to an object of interest.

A lot of work has been happening behind the scenes and we have been following up leads for sightings of Yellow-bellied Gliders in West Logan/Ipswich region. This has been involved a lot of private landholder engagement since it seems that is where these gliders love to live!

After weeks of second-hand sightings and the odd Yellow-bellied Glider vocalisation, we are excited to announce that a local resident Brenden Ward managed to snap some of the attached camera-trap footage of a very nosey Yellow-bellied Glider checking out some potential new real estate!

This is potentially one of the first wild images of a west Logan Yellow-bellied Glider area. There’s a potential they may have been living in this area for a while, but local residents may not have been able to identify what these noisy banshees were!

This footage installs confidence that we are on the right path of finding another South East Queensland population of Yellow-bellied Gliders! Next on the list is engage with more landholders and start trying to gather movement and population information!

This was filmed from a safe distance with telephoto lens and side lit, then post editing to brighten up and crop to get a closer look, so as you can see the gliders were not bothered by my presence and went about their natural way.

PLASTIC FREE SA❕👏

South Australia has become the first state to ban single-use plastics in Australia!

Well done SA!! The laws will come into effect in 2021 with the banning of key single-use plastic items such as straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers. After 12 months, expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and oxo-degradable plastics will also be included.

The QLD legislation was ready to go before parliament for a vote but was not tabled on the last sitting day prior to the election. The next opportunity will now be after the election in December or early in 2021.

IT'S UN-BEE-LIEVABLE! 🐝📷
Bee photographer and Wildlife Queensland volunteer @jenny.thynne recently witnessed one of nature's marvels. Here's Jenny's amazing bee story ...

A few months ago I bought some pigeon pea seeds (Cajunus cajun), as I’d read they were highly attractive to Great Carpenter bees (Xylocopa species).

The seeds germinated, and the plants have been in flower for weeks, but no carpenter bees have visited them. What has happened instead is that some Megachile bee species, which love yellow pea flowers, (also known as leafcutters for obvious reasons) have been visiting and pollinating the flowers. They cut little circles from these and other plant species' leaves to put in their nests and make cells for the larvae. When they've finished laying eggs and placing pollen in the cells for the larvae to feed on when they hatch, they cap the nest with numerous leaf cuttings.

As if that wasn't amazing enough, when one of these bees lands on a cajanus flower, they burrow into the heart of the flower where the nectar is and then press on the two lower petals with their hind legs so that the stamens rise and touch the abdomen. I watched through the camera lens as one of them literally scraped the pollen straight onto the hairs beneath her abdomen.

We now have a crop of ripening pigeon peas, thanks to their efforts.😊

There are some moments in life where you can do nothing but marvel at your luck. Seeing a Greater Glider at the best of times is an honour, but seeing one during the day and getting a photo is a straight up miracle. I rarely question my choice of film, but I genuinely lost sleep over this roll. "Should I have brought a digital just in case? What happens if the roll or camera fails?"
I needn't have worried for these are probably my favourite photographs I've ever taken. A once in a lifetime opportunity and one I'll not soon forget.
