Would you like to be part of a Citizen Science project to observe platypus numbers in Opossum Creek Catchment?

Springfield Lakes Nature Care Inc held its first ever PlatypusWatch Program in 2021 with 3 sightings on 2 creek systems. A Platypus Watch event helps to record observations taken on one day to help scientists monitor these shy mammals and find out how they are doing during effects of climate change, flood or drought.

To be a volunteer for this event you must register your expression of interest before the 30 July as ticket sales will close and only those registered will be supplied with a survey location. Information such as survey forms and volunteer information will need to be completed and returned before the day of the event for insurance and safety purposes. This event is not suitable for children as it is near water. People will need to have their own or shared transport to reach the locations. You must be prepared to sit quietly for up to 2 hours observing a creek, during the winter months as this is when platypus are most active searching for a partner to mate with.

Whilst getting up early in the morning may not appeal to some, this is the best time to observe platypus is just after dawn as they come out to feed. To reward you for your efforts we will hold a continental breakfast, coffee and croissants, yoghurt and fruit after the watch ends. Please register for a ticket to be a volunteer observer as soon as possible, as places are limited.

Meeting point: Meet at the car park on Ian Keiler Drive, next to Robelle Domain Parkland.
