Wildlife Queensland Townsville Branch field trip program.
Our story
Established in 1968, the Townsville Branch has a long history of caring for our local environment and encouraging the community to understand and appreciate the wildlife and natural places that exist within our city boundaries and immediate surrounds. Of special interest are the health and management of nearby national and environmental parks (such as at the Town Common or on Magnetic Island).
We have also been active in encouraging science-based and humane management of wildlife in urban settings and promoting a better understanding of their conservation needs.
What we do
Wildlife Queensland Townsville Branch advocates strongly for the protection of coastal woodlands and rainforest, and for sound coastal, reef and land management.
Further afield, we have a strong interest in the protection of coastal woodlands and rainforest, the protection of Hinchinbrook Island and Channel, and broader coastal, reef and land management issues.
- We advocate for the conservation of threatened species such as the dugong, snubfin dolphin, mahogany glider and southern cassowary.
- Mahogany glider recovery: In December 2020, we completed a three-year monitoring survey of the endangered mahogany glider. Our branch is involved in ongoing mahogany glider surveys on land in the animals’ southern range.
- Annual PiP Count: We support the annual pied imperial pigeon count at North Brook Island, with several members regularly volunteering alongside those from the Cassowary Coast-Hinchinbrook Branch and the wider community.
- Field trip program: We run a program of field trips (at which non-members are welcome) to places of interest around the district in order to enjoy and learn about our natural environment.

Last week Wildlife Queensland Townsville Branch member Liz Downes headed to Yunbenun (Magnetic Island) to celebrate the Magnetic Island Nature Care Association’s successful campaign to purchase Claude’s Block — an important lowland area that will be placed under permanent protection and will give the island’s resident koalas safe access to their preferred eucalypts growing in the richest, deepest soils on the island.
Vale Suzie Smith 1952–2021
Suzie Smith, founder and long-time office-bearer of WPSQ’s Cassowary Coast and Hinchinbrook Branch, died peacefully in Tully hospital on 27 December 2021 after a long struggle with cancer – and so we lost one of the north’s truest, most abiding champions of our natural and cultural heritage.
