This September, Wildlife Queensland and Maleny Chocolate Co. are inviting Australian residents to “Name the Platypus Chocolate”.
The online naming contest, which runs from 11 – 28 September, gives one lucky person a chance to name Maleny Chocolate Co.’s new chocolate platypus and WIN a $100 voucher to spend in their online store. Yum!
Maleny’s unofficial choc mascot
The Maleny Chocolate Platypus is a delightful creation that pays homage to our town’s cherished unofficial mascot, said Maleny Chocolate Co. owner Troy Wainwright.
“Just as fortunate residents and visitors are graced with glimpses of the playful platypus family in the Obi Obi Creek, we’ve crafted a chocolate that captures their whimsical charm,” said Troy.
“With each bite, you’ll experience the magic of Maleny and the wonder of its unique inhabitants. But the joy doesn’t stop there—our commitment to preserving this remarkable species goes beyond the chocolate itself. We are proud to announce that 10% of the proceeds from each Maleny Chocolate Platypus sale will be donated to Wildlife Queensland PlatypusWatch. This contribution will empower vital conservation efforts and valuable research initiatives dedicated to safeguarding the platypus population and their natural habitat.”

How to enter
From today until 28 September, eligible entrants can nominate one name via the Wildlife Queensland contest web page.
Simply complete the online entry form and include your name suggestion. Don’t be afraid to be as creative or as meaningful as possible!
A shortlist of names will then be released so the public can vote for their favourite before the final name is revealed. A second prize winner will be randomly chosen from the public vote.
“We’re excited to see the creative names people come up with for the chocolate platypus, and hope this inspires more conversation about this iconic Aussie who is disappearing from many local waterways in Queensland,” said Wildlife Queensland PlatypusWatch project officer Tamielle Brunt.
“We are so grateful for Maleny Chocolate Co.’s generous support. This partnership not only contributes funding to support PlatypusWatch projects, but it also allows us another avenue to promote their conservation and importance in freshwater ecosystems.”
Let’s celebrate the magic of the platypus and the joy of chocolate by creating a name that’ll delight taste buds and ignite imaginations! The (newly named) chocolate platypus will be available for online purchase at the close of the contest.
