Brisbane Biodiversity Seminar

Join the Brisbane Biodiversity Seminar, either online or in person, for an informative evening, with our three guest speakers sharing their knowledge about gliders and other nocturnal wildlife.

Presentation 1: Matt Cecil

Matt Cecil is a Project Manager with Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (WPSQ). WPSQ is Queensland’s longest-running non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving Queensland’s native wildlife and habitat. WPSQ works with governments and other organisations to protect threatened habitats, from the coast to the rainforest, and has coordinated projects that conserve threatened species, educate communities and raise awareness of wildlife conservation issues.

Matt manages many projects helping to conserve threatened species in southeast Queensland, including Greater Gliders, Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, Platypus and Spotted-tail Quoll, to name a few. Greater Gliders are one of Matt’s passions and together with the Queensland Glider Network has been heavily involved with the conservation of Australia’s largest gliding mammal.

Presentation 2: Merryl Simpson

Merryl is the owner of Feathertail Nature Refuge in the hills of Upper Brookfield. Merryl is also an Environmental Educator with the Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre and runs her own business from home supporting others to reconnect with nature. Merryl’s 8 hectare property, which is also protected by a Voluntary Conservation Covenant is a beacon for wildlife, but it is when the sun goes down when the real action happens. Merryl will talk about her experiences with gliders on her property and some amazing recent success with some innovative nestbox installation, thanks to a Queensland Government Nature Refuge Landholders Grant.

Presentation 3: Geckoes Wildlife

By popular demand, Martin Fingland from Geckoes will bring out a selection of nocturnal wildlife for everyone to see up close. Many of these species are only active under the cover of darkness, avoiding the heat of the day, often competing for the same habitat. Meet a selection of rarely seen wildlife and discover what lurks in the bush after dark.
