Independent review of EPBC Act released

Koala

On 30 October 2020, the Independent Reviewer of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999, Professor Graeme Samuel AC, provided the Minister for the Environment with his Final Report.

The Report was tabled in Parliament on 28 January 2021 and is now available at http://www.epbcactreview.environment.gov.au.

Professor Samuel provides 38 recommendations for reform.

The Government will now take some time to consider the Report and respond. Similarly, Wildlife Queensland will need to take some time to determine its position in relation to the review.

“What we can state now is, while we strongly support some recommendations, we are bitterly opposed to others,” says Wildlife Queensland Policies & Campaigns Manager Des Boyland.

“We had hoped for stronger recommendations to improve the management of our environment and the conservation of our wildlife. Hopefully, the detail underpinning the recommendations will deliver this.”
