Changes to NCA Regulations

28 July 2020

The Queensland Government has introduced changes to the subordinate regulations of the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

Snake - Marco VolinoThe Nature Conservation Act 1992 and subordinate regulations are Queensland laws that safeguard our diverse range of protected animals and plants.

New regulations will come into effect from 22 August 2020:

The Animals Regulation

The Animals Regulation implements a new licensing framework for the commercial and recreational keeping of protected animals. Consultation on the framework occurred through the 2018 Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement (PDF, 2 MB). The Decision Regulatory Impact Statement (PDF, 5 MB) details the consultation outcomes.

The framework will simplify the current recreational and commercial animal licensing system to improve business practices, conservation and biosecurity outcomes, and reduce the risks of illegal trade of native animals.

Wildlife Queensland does not support the keeping of native fauna as pets but recognises that such activities are permitted by law. We are hopeful that the new Animals Regulation will deliver these improved outcomes.

The Plants Regulation

The new Plants Regulation transfers all existing plant provisions into a single stand-alone regulation.
