Updated 26 July 2024
Wildlife Queensland is thrilled to join forces with the Australian Wildlife Society (AWS) to help protect greater gliders. The organisation kindly contributed $10,269 towards our new greater glider project, bringing us closer to our fundraising goal of $100,000.
But AWS’s commitment to one of our favourite gliding mammals doesn’t stop there! AWS has chosen the greater glider as their 2024 Wildlife of the Year to help raise the gliding marsupial’s profile, encourage successful conservation outcomes, and provide additional support to ensure their survival in the future.
AWS launches fundraising initiative to support greater glider conservation
Based in New South Wales, AWS is a national not-for-profit wildlife conservation organisation whose mission is to conserve Australia’s wildlife (flora and fauna) through national environmental education, public awareness, advocacy, and hands-on conservation work.
To raise the profile of our new greater glider project, AWS has generously established Guardians of the Greater Gliders. This fundraising campaign aims to raise as many funds as possible between now and the end of the financial year (30 June 2024).
Urgent need for conservation action
Greater gliders are two species of large gliding marsupials in the genus Petauroides, both found in eastern Australia: the northern greater glider (Petauroides minor) and the southern and central greater glider (Petauroides volans).
Unfortunately, these species are listed as endangered and are threatened with extinction due to the logging of hollow-bearing trees and the loss and fragmentation of their natural habitats.
Become a Guardian of the Greater Gliders
One hundred percent of the funds (minus PayPal’s fees) AWS raises through the Guardians of the Greater Gliders campaign will go to Wildlife Queensland’s new greater glider project. If you wish to donate directly, please call AWS on 0424 287 297. Alternatively, visit the AWS donation page. Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible.
Join forces with the Australian Wildlife Society and Wildlife Queensland to become Guardians of the Greater Gliders! Together, we can make a difference and secure a brighter future for these endangered marsupials.
