This stunning Papuan frogmouth was spotted by @_faunagraphic on a recent Cape York Wildlife Photography Tour.

These nocturnal birds have a beak that is bright yellow on the inside. Whilst hunting, they open their mouth to reflect the moonlight and insects are attracted to the vibrant yellow hue. In this instance, @_faunagraphic found the frogmouth took advantage of their red torchlight, which attracted insects.

The Papuan frogmouth is the largest of frogmouths in terms of length. It is found in the Aru Islands in eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and in Far North Queensland.

An incredible capture of mum and baby spotted-tailed quolls by @cesar_on_safari

This nationally endangered marsupial carnivore is naturally timid and solitary, so spotting a quoll family is a rare and amazing occurrence.

Spotted-tailed quolls have a single litter of up to 6 young each year, born between May and August. Young are carried in a rudimentary pouch. When they become too large, they are left behind in a nursery den while the mother forages. Young quolls become independent at about 100 days.

Repost from @platypus_protector Posted @withregr Repost from @platypus_protector

Posted @withregram • @platypus_protector I wish it could be a more positive outcome for platypus. However, it’s great that the word is getting out there and starts important conversations. It is a step in the right direction as more people engage and become aware of this issue. We can turn the future around for platypus and other iconic Australian species.

Thank you Graham Readfearn of the @guardian for the interview and enthusiasm to head out and try your luck platypus spotting!

Wildlife Queensland’s #platypuswatchnetwork and Wildlife Queensland’s #platypuswatchnetwork and #platypus research are in the news!
Read this important update from @platypus_protector below 👇

Posted @withregram • @platypus_protector We published some of our eDNA results and reported our concerns for platypus populations in waterways around Brisbane. After repeated sampling (of multiple sites along waterways) over 4 years, we failed to detect platypus DNA in areas where they were once sighted.

I hope now that this research is out, we can gain momentum in conservation efforts and local support for our iconic species!

It’s scary. They are a species that could disappear right under our noses! We need priority research and protection for the platypus, so that our beloved icon doesn’t slowly become or even landslide into a distant myth.

Posted @withregram • @goodwill_wine This Christmas, you can help save our spotted-tailed quolls from extinction. Join our #QuollQuest to help!
https://www.chuffed.org/project/quoll-quest

Our charity partner, @wildlifequeensland is dedicating its Christmas Appeal to the spotted-tailed quoll, an iconic native species listed as endangered at the federal level.

It's their goal to raise $34,000 by 31 December to conduct surveys in identified bushland areas between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast using scent detection dog teams and infrared camera monitoring to understand if spotted-tailed quolls still inhabit the region.

A better understanding of where spotted-tailed quolls remain will provide them with opportunities to discuss and implement conservation actions with relevant landholders, land managers, and natural resource management groups, and the government agency responsible for protected areas.

Head to the Quoll Quest Christmas Appeal webpage to make a tax-deductible donation today.

With your help, we can find and save our spotted-tailed quolls ... before it’s too late.
