The Great Southern Bioblitz (GSB) is a worldwide citizen science event, held from 24-27 November 2023 throughout the Southern Hemisphere using the iNaturalist app and website. iNaturalist is an online social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe – and everyone is invited to participate!
The purpose of this event is to highlight both the immense biodiversity spread across the Southern Hemisphere in the flourishing springtime, as well as to engage the public in science and nature learning using the citizen science platform iNaturalist.
To get involved in this year’s Great Southern Bioblitz:
1. Download the iNaturalist app to your device or set up an account on your computer.
2. Make observations between 24-27 November and upload them to iNaturalist (you can make observations at any time, but only those over the bioblitz period will count as part of the GSB).
3. Don’t worry if you can’t identify the organism. Just make sure you get some good clear photos or sounds (iNaturalist uses artificial intelligence to suggest identifications and experts will be able to verify what your living thing is).
