The Wildlife Queensland Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2020 was held on Saturday, 26 September at the Redlands City Lions Club in Cleveland.

Whilst this year’s COVID compliant event was limited to 30 attendees, we received a good representation from local branches. Thank you to all members who attended the AGM.

We welcome new councillor, Dave Wright and new treasurer, Madeleine Hodder.

Our thanks and appreciation to outgoing councillors. We appreciate the time and work they have given over the past years.

Your Voice for Your Wildlife Awards

Every year, Wildlife Queensland recognises the achievements and efforts of our members.

The categories for this year’s awards were:

  • The Margaret Thorsborne Award – for an outstanding contribution by a Wildlife Queensland member; and
  • The Community Engagement and/or Education Award – for a Wildlife Queensland branch.
Congratulations to this year’s winners:
  • Margaret Thorsborne Award: Awarded to Liz Downs (Wildlife Queensland Townsville branch)
Liz’s involvement in the work of the Wildlife Queensland Townsville branch, its campaigns and conservation in general has been inspirational.
  • Community Engagement Award: Awarded to WPSQ Upper Dawson branch’s “Theodore Bird Hide”
The branch, supported by the Banana Shire Council and the Theodore Lions Club, erected a bird hide on Castle Creek, Theodore in August 2020 to encourage the observation of our local avian fauna. Read more about the Theodore Bird Hide opening.

Holly Bryant Award

The Holly Bryant Award is granted annually to one of our previous year’s placement students in recognition of their contributions.

The award was established in memoriam to honour the work of Holly Bryant who sought to formalise the relationship between Wildlife Queensland and the University of Queensland in 2014 in her then role as the Society’s Projects Manager.

2019-2020 award winner

The Holly Bryant Award for the most outstanding work-integrated learning placement student for 2019-2020 has been awarded to Jacob Slinger from the University of Queensland, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Jake completed his placement program under supervision by Wildlife Queensland Projects Manager Matt Cecil on behalf of the Wildlife Land Fund Ltd (WLFL).

Jake was tasked with researching and writing an Environmental Management Plan for the Neil Holloway Reesville Nature Refuge, owned by the WLFL. As part of the task, Jake was required to liaise closely with stakeholders including the Sunshine Coast Council’s Conservation Partnerships team, ecological restoration experts/contractors and WLFL board members. In addition, numerous site visits and inspections of the Reesville property were required.

Jake completed this project to a high standard and delivered an Environmental Management Plan that is currently guiding the ongoing environmental restoration of the Neil Holloway Reesville Nature Refuge. Jake was a welcome member of the Wildlife Queensland office during his placement time with us.

This award recognises Jake’s hard work during his placement period and also his commitment to the ecological/environmental management sector, as evidenced by his participation in regular volunteer bush care events and his active involvement in the Pollinator Link initiative.

Congratulations, Jake!
