This is what happens when governments reduce so-called ‘green tape’. Wildlife Queensland, the Boomerang Alliance and the waste and recycled tyre industry warned the then Newman Government that watering down environmental regulations on tyres would lead to tyre dumps. That was in 2014.

Last month, an illegal tyre dump in Rocklea, Brisbane, caught alight. Boomerang Alliance estimated there to be at least seven such illegal dumps in south-east Queensland alone, holding over one million used tyres.

It’s time for the state government to act and remove the loophole that allows tyres collected for recycling to be simply dumped illegally – and left to burn.
